Small pleasures: discovering that iOS 5 adds an en dash to the keyboard. Press-and-hold the hyphen and you’re there.
As a heavy user of em dashes (which have been available on the iOS keyboard for a while), I’ve on occasion found myself wishing for an en dash to round out the set. According to Wikipedia, the en dash can be used “to contrast values, or illustrate a relationship between two things.” More commonly, it’s used “to indicate a closed range of values, meaning a range with clearly defined and non-infinite upper and lower boundaries. This may include ranges such as those between dates, times, or numbers.”
I had no idea there was even an em dash option — but I have to say, I’m lazy with the en dash and usually just go for a regular old hyphen. It’s a free country operating system, man.
